Greenpower Project. Club members begin building an electric car

17 May 2017

Thanks to a partnership between The Society of Motor Manufacturers & Traders (SMMT) and the Club, members have taken part in the Greenpower Project, dedicated to promoting engineering and technology to young people aged 9-25.

The 8 week course began on 11th May and was enthusiastically met by members and staff. All twelve places (plus reserves) were filled: 8 male; 4 female. Each week staff from the SMMT worked with members to design and build their own kit electric car, which they raced on September. 10th. A variety of roles were needed from the team which not only provided excellent hands-on experience of an engineering challenge, but also included experience of leadership, safety, PR and data as well as materials, building and driving.

Luke Hampshire of the SMMT said in week 7: "They all seem to be enjoying the challenge of gradually building the car and are not only learning about aerodynamics but also working as part of a team."

Follow the story week by week in our picture gallery, culminating in racing the car at Dunsfold Park on 10 September, where the team came 7th out of 15, meaning they have qualified to race again at future meets.

Thank you to all the staff at the SMMT who helped our members learn, grow and open their eyes to the world of engineering!
