St Andrew's Club is recognised at No. 10 Downing Street by the outgoing Prime Minister

13 Jul 2016

On Tuesday 12th July David Cameron hosted his last reception as Prime Minister at 10 Downing Street where he met members, volunteers, supporters and staff of St Andrew’s Club and their guests. The event provided an opportunity to highlight the valuable youth and community work done by the Club, which this year celebrates its 150th anniversary. The Club has over 700 members, as well as being home for various local community activities and groups, including its thriving pensioners’ dance group.

David Cameron recognised the work of St Andrew’s Club and the need for support for the Club was highlighted by Elizabeth Cuffy, Chair of Trustees, who said to the guests: “Being the world’s oldest youth club is no guarantee for the future. We absolutely rely on support from you to meet our running costs and continue our work.”

Guests also heard from Michael Dornelly, 19, and a member of the Club since the age of twelve. A local boy, he told how St Andrew’s Club had enabled him to build confidence and aspiration through helping him qualify to become the youngest football coach at St Andrew’s, managing the league-topping U12 team. Michael is now deciding which University place to accept to study Business Management, and is already thinking of going on to a Law Conversion.

Michael recognised the role of St Andrew’s Club, “They gave me the opportunity to develop and then trusted me to get on with it.” Michael’s mother, Elisabetta Di-Pietra was there to see him. “I am so proud of Michael who is taking control of his life, with great support from the Club.”
