St Andrew’s Club calls out for votes to bag a share of bag fund

22 Aug 2017

St Andrew’s Club is bidding to bag a massive cash boost from the Tesco Bags of Help initiative.

Vote throughout September and October for us in your local Tesco store* to help provide staff and ingredients for a year’s worth of cooking classes for local young people aged 10 to 18 years at St Andrew's Club.

Tesco teamed up with Groundwork to launch its community funding scheme, which sees grants of £4,000, £2,000 and £1,000 – raised from carrier bag sales in Tesco stores - being awarded to local community projects.

St Andrew’s Club is one of the three groups in every Tesco region groups shortlisted to receive the cash award and shoppers are being invited to head along to Tesco stores to vote for who they think should take away the top grant.

Every Wednesday, there are three cooking workshops which can each teach up to six members, so at least 18 members benefit. It is one of the most popular activities at St Andrew's and we have created a programme of cooking classes where we teach members a range of skills relating to food, nutrition, healthy eating, meal planning and food budgeting including comparing home cooking costs with ready meal costs.

We believe that the ability to produce basic home cooked food is an invaluable life skill. These basic skills can influence children's food choices for the rest of their lives. Our trained youth workers will often build special relationships with members through the cooking programme, particularly supporting them in their emotional and personal needs. For example, during one session, a member voiced that he was glad he was learning to cook because his mum had been diagnosed with cancer and he would be able cook for her. On hearing this we were able to help put in place the support he needed while he was going through this challenging period.

“Cooking sessions can also provide an opportunity to carry out important youth work with those members who are experiencing challenges and difficulties. Working alongside children and young people in a creative way can help build positive and trusting relationships and foster a sense of wellbeing,” says Paul Whittle, Club Manager

Notes:

To vote, you will need to make a purchase within store of any value. You will receive one token per transaction and it's not necessary to purchase a carrier bag in order to receive a token.
