We are delighted that The Rt Hon. the Lord Strathclyde CH PC took up the position of President of St Andrew’s Club today, 1st September 2018. Lord Strathclyde took over from The Earl of Selborne GBE FRS DL, who returned to being Vice President, thus maintaining a continuity of marvellous involvement in St Andrew’s Club by the Selborne family, since the Club’s earliest beginnings.
Lord Strathclyde, Tom, lives locally, and after visiting the Club recently said: “I was very impressed to see the breadth of youth work undertaken with local young people, right here on my doorstep. With children of my own I know how important formative experiences and opportunities can be to a young person’s development. I am deeply flattered to have been asked to be the Club’s latest President, and look forward to helping it reach out to many more in the local community who may not yet know of its existence”.
We also thank Lord Selborne for all he and his family have done for the Club. The first Lord Selborne, who served at the time as Lord Chancellor in William Gladstone’s government, began to give his time and his knowledge to the Club in 1882. Lord Selborne says: “I have treasured my time as President at St Andrew’s Club, particularly since my tenure took in the 150th anniversary of the Club. This enabled us to look back and see all that has been achieved since it began as St Andrew’s Home and Club for Working Boys in 1866, to what it is now – a thriving modern youth club, continuing to give local young people what they need and deserve”.
An official handover from Lord Selborne to Lord Strathclyde will take place at the Club’s annual President’s Reception on 21 March 2019.
